Nonlinear dispersive partial differential equations have been an active field of research during the last 50 years that draws its motivation from various applications in hydrodynamics, nonlinear optics and plasma physics for example. Progress in this area of mathematics often relies either on modern methods from PDE theory or the Inverse Scattering Transform method. The book aims to provide a unified review of both these approaches, comparing advantages and shortcomings of each, while also presenting modeling aspects and numerical simulations to illustrate behavior of solutions. It serves as a sound introduction to nonlinear dispersive equations as well as a comprehensive survey of the topic and the current state of research. The authors mainly focus on the Korteweg-de Vries equation, the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, the Benjamin-Ono equation, the Intermediate Long Wave equation, Davey-Stewartson systems, Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations, the Novikov-Veselov equation and the Derivative Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, but also touch on numerous related equations.
