In this paper the author pursues the work done by J. J. Carmona, T. Trent and J. L. Wang on approximation by rational modules. Let \(X\subset {\mathbb{C}}\) be a nowhere dense compact and g a sufficiently smooth function on \({\mathbb{C}}\) which satisfies (\(\partial g/\partial \bar z)(z)\neq 0\), \(z\in X\). We prove that the restriction to X of each \(C^{\infty}({\mathbb{C}})\)-function is approximable in the norm of Lip(n- 1,X) by functions of the type \(r_ 0+r_ 1g+...+r_ ng^ n\), where the \(r_ j\) are rational functions with poles off X and n is a fixed integer not less than 2. In fact we prove stronger results (which are shown to be sharp) using Sobolev type norms adapted to the problem. The results are interpreted within the theory of approximation by solutions of partial differential equations.
