Let \(\mathcal{H}\) and \(\mathcal{K}\) denote Hilbert spaces. Let \(\mathcal{S}\subseteq\mathcal{H}\) and \(\mathcal{T}\subseteq\mathcal{K}\) be closed subspaces. An operator \(A:\mathcal{H} \rightarrow\mathcal{K}\) is called \((\mathcal{S,T})\)-complementable if there exists projections \(E\) on \(\mathcal{H}\) and \(F\) on \(\mathcal{K}\) such that \(R(E)=\mathcal{S}\), \(R(F)=\mathcal{T}\) and \(AE=F^*A\). This notion is then extended to weak complementability, whose definition is too technical to be included here. Characterizations for the triple \((A,\mathcal{S,T})\) to be complementable or weakly complementable are proved. A detailed discussion of applications to bilateral Schur complements and generalized Wiener-Hopf operators is presented. For instance, the invertibility or generalized invertiblity of general Wiener-Hopf operators through the notions of complementable and weakly complementable operators is investigated, and bilateral shorted operators are studied.
