Continuing work by one of the authors, \textit{X. Wang} [Numer. Math. 121, No. 4, 753--779 (2012; Zbl 1435.76054)], here an oceanographic model of temperature, salinity and velocity is investigated in two spatial directions (length and depth) along with corresponding initial and boundary conditions. Introducing non-dimensional variables, vorticity and stream function, the authors derive estimates for solutions from which, referring to \textit{R. Temam} [Infinite-dimensional dynamical systems in mechanics and physics. 2nd ed. New York, NY: Springer (1997; Zbl 0871.35001)], the existence of solutions, a global attractor and an invariant measure supported on the attractor can be obtained. Turning to the time-discretized equations (taking the backward differentiation formula BDF2 for the time derivative and a second-order explicit approximation for the nonlinear terms), they prove, for sufficiently small time step and sufficiently large times, boundedness of the discrete solutions and convergence (for vanishing time step) to the global attractor and the invariant measure.
