The set \(C(G)\) of conjugacy classes of subgroups of \(G\) has a natural partial ordering [see the preceding review Zbl 0827.20027]. Taking nonempty ascending chains \([H_0]<\dots<[H_n]\) of elements of \(C(G)\) as \(n\)-simplices, topological methods can be applied to \(C(G)\). In the case that \(G\) is finite and solvable the author classifies the homotopy type of \(C(G)\) and gives a formula for its Möbius number. Techniques of \textit{W. Gaschütz} [Arch. Math. 13, 418-426 (1962; Zbl 0109.01403)] are essential in the proofs.
