    Let \(G\) be a finite group with Sylow 2-subgroup \(P\), and let \(\sigma\) be the field automorphism of \(\mathbb{Q}^{ab}\) such that \(\sigma(\eta)= \eta\) for every root of unity \(\eta\) of 2-power order and \(\sigma(\eta)=\eta^2\) for every root of unity \(\eta\) of odd order. The paper under review deals with the following conjecture: \(N_G(P)\) is 2-nilpotent if and only if all irreducible characters of odd degree in the principal 2-block of \(G\) are fixed by \(\sigma\). The authors reduce this conjecture to almost simple groups whose socle has 2-power index. They also show that this conjecture implies that \(N_G(P)=P\) if and only if every irreducible character of \(G\) of odd degree is fixed by \(\sigma\). Now let \(p\) be an arbitrary prime, let \(P\) be a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup of a finite group \(G\), and suppose that \(N_G(P)\) has a normal \(p\)-complement \(V\). Then, the authors construct a natural surjection \(\text{Irr}_{p'} (G) \to \text{Irr}(V)\) where \(\text{Irr}_{p'}(G)\) denotes the set of irreducible characters of \(G\) of degree prime to \(p\).
