It is an open question whether every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a tight contact structure. When a closed hyperbolic 3-manifold admits a taut foliation, one can perturb the taut foliation to obtain a tight contact structure [\textit{Y. M. Eliashberg} and \textit{W. P. Thurston}, Turk. J. Math. 20, No. 1, 19--35 (1996; Zbl 0879.57021)]. The first infinite family of tight contact structures on hyperbolic 3-manifolds without taut foliation was given by [\textit{T. Etgü}, Int. Math. Res. Not. 2012, No. 20, 4775--4784 (2012; Zbl 1261.57023)]. These examples are all obtained from Dehn surgery along a section of a torus bundle over a circle. In the paper under review, the authors construct tight contact structures on an infinite family of 3-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery along a section of a hyperbolic surface bundle over a circle. This is achieved by constructing a Stein filling from a Stein filling of the hyperbolic surface bundle using surgery diagrams.
