    Let \(a_ 1,a_ 2,a_ 3,\dots\) be a sequence of real numbers. The following linear second-order difference equation is investigated: (1) \(x_{n+2}-(a_{n+1}+2)x_{n+1}+x_ n=0\) \((n\geq 0)\). It is proved that (1) has solutions \(b_ 0,b_ 1,b_ 2,\dots\) and \(c_ 0,c_ 1,c_ 2,\dots\) such that \[ \lim_{n\to\infty}b_ n=\lim_{n\to\infty}(c_ n/n)=1 \] if \(\sum^ \infty_{i=1}ia_ i\) converges and satisfies a second condition which is weaker than absolute convergence. Moreover, estimates of \(b_ n\), \(b_{n+1}-b_ n\), \(c_ n\) and \(c_{n+1}-c_ n\) as \(n\to\infty\) are given.
