The authors prove that the context of linear elasticity the elastic symmetries are twelve; i.e., the eleven symmetries pertaining to the crystal classes and isotropy, not only in the theories proposed up to now but exactly. Each symmetry is defined by the group of rotations; for example, the orthotropy is defined by the group generated by the three rotations about three perpendicular axes. The concept of partial ordering is helpful in simplifying the component forms of the elasticity tensors. The twelve elastic symmetries are listed with the number of independent elastic constants.
