The authors first present five conditions for an immersion into complex space \(\mathbb C^n\) to be generic, and prove they are equivalent each other. The main purpose (Theorem 1.2) of this paper is to give a bundle-theoretic condition for a manifold to admit a generic immersion into complex space. As an application, the authors state the existence of a totally real immersion of manifolds of dimensions 2 and 3, and of spheres. As for the existence of totally real embeddings, the authors discuss some results, mostly obtained in the 1980's, in a later section, where some of \textit{M. Audin}'s results in [Comment. Math. Helvetici, 63, 593--623 (1988; Zbl 0666.57024)] are rearranged. Some open questions on total real immersions and embeddings of compact orientable manifolds and on CR-structures are presented in the last section.
