The author deals with the existence and regularity of global weak solutions to the quasi-geostrophic equations when the initial data belongs to \(L^p\) or \(\dot H^{-1/2}\). Note that, for the quasi-geostrophic equation, a nonlinear term has better structure than for 3D Euler equations, which helps the author to prove existence of global weak solutions. Moreover, in the dissipative case, when the initial data are on \(L^p\), \(p> 2\), the author presents a regularity result for these solutions.
