The concept of spherical wavelets was proposed by \textit{S. Dahlke} et al. [Numer. Funct. Anal. Optim. 16, No. 1--2, 19--41 (1995; Zbl 0849.42020)] and \textit{I. Weinreich} [Appl. Comput. Harmon. Anal. 10, 1--26 (2001; Zbl 0983.42025)]. In this paper, the authors present a method for approximating spherical functions from discrete data of a block-wise grid structure. The wavelet functions within a biorthogonalisation process are generated by locally supported zonal kernel functions. The approach by a fast wavelet transform on spherical reference surfaces can be applied to geophysical and geodetically relevant problems in observables of the gravity field.
