Between 1695 and 1705 Johann Bernoulli held the chair of mathematics in Groningen. His move to the Netherlands from Basel was possibly to escape from the shadow of his older brother Jakob. Although his lectures were popular he came into conflicts on both theological and scientific grounds. After his brother's death in 1705 he returned to Basel where, despite offers of posts elsewhere he remains for the rest of his life.
