Let \(F\) be a non-archimedean local field, \(G\) be the multiplicative group of a finite dimensional central simple \(F\)-algebra, and \(G'\) be the kernel of the reduced norm map \(\det'\colon G\to F^\times\). The author shows that if \(H\) is a distinguished open subgroup of \(G\) and \(\pi\) is an irreducible smooth complex representation of \(H\), then the character \({\text{trace}}(\pi)\) is a locally integrable distribution on \(H\) that is locally constant on the set of regular elements of \(H\). Similarly, if \(\pi'\) is an irreducible smooth complex representation of \(G'\), then \({\text{trace}}(\pi')\) is a locally integrable representation of \(G'\) that is locally constant on the set of regular elements of \(G'\). If \(F\) has characteristic zero, similar results are known for all groups of the form \(G(F)\), where \(G\) is a reductive linear algebraic group defined over \(F\), due to the work of \textit{Harish-Chandra} (the connected case) [Lie Theor. Appl., Proc. Ann. Semin. Can. Math. Congr., Kingston 1977, 281--347 (1978; Zbl 0433.22012)] and \textit{L. Clozel} (the non-connected case) [Can. J. Math. 39, 149--167 (1987; Zbl 0629.22008)]. For all \(F\), \textit{Harish-Chandra} [Proc. Indian Acad. Sci., Math. Sci. 90, 95--102 (1981; Zbl 0512.22010)] also established that \({\text{trace}}(\pi')\) is a distribution that is locally constant on the set of regular semisimple elements of \(G'\). The author mentions an application of these results to automorphic forms, which will be presented separately. Namely, they allow one to prove by global means the surjectivity of the automorphic induction map without appealing to results of Arthur on tempered virtual characters that are known only in characteristic zero.
