The author studies a problem which describes the nonstationary motion of a viscous incompressible fluid flowing down an inclined plane under the effect of gravity. The flow is governed by the Navier-Stokes equations with the adherence boundary condition at the inclined plane. The condition on the upper free surface states that the surface consists of the same fluid particles at each time and expresses a discontinuity in the normal stress proportional to the mean curvature of the fluid surface. The main result can be summarized as follows: Suppose the Reynolds number of the unperturbed flow is sufficiently small. Then, if the initial free surface and velocity field are sufficiently close to those of the unperturbed flow, there exists a solution to the problem on an arbitrary time interval.
