A refined asymptotic perturbation (RAP) method is proposed and applied to several typical nonlinear dynamical systems. The phase portrait, waveform, frequency response curves, and influence of system parameters are studied by using this procedure. Comparisons with numerical results demonstrate the validity of this approach. The RAP method can be directly used to solve various harmonic components via the harmonic balance with much less algebra. The form of the solutions can easily be determinated. For the RAP method, the asymptotic solutions are separated into fast and slow parts. The fundamental harmonic terms are supposed to be of \(O(1)\) and the proper orders of harmonic terms.
