Let \(G\) be an isotropic, almost-simple algebraic group over \(\mathbb Q\) such that its real rank is \(\geq2\). Then \(G\) is called minimal if no proper, isotropic, almost-simple \(\mathbb Q\)-subgroup of \(G\) has real rank \(\geq2\). The authors provide, up to isogeny, a precise characterisation of \(G\) under this minimality property (see Theorem 1.18). Furthermore, their main theorem 3.4 contains a generalisation of this result for algebraic groups defined over any algebraic number fields. By these results, and by the justification given in Section 2, minimal elements can be identified in the partially ordered categories of (A) finite-volume, noncompact, complete, locally symmetric spaces of higher rank; (B) nonuniform, irreducible lattices in semisimple Lie groups of higher real rank; (C) isotropic, simple algebraic \(\mathbb Q\)-groups of higher real rank.
