    Let \((n_k)_{k \geq 1}\) be a sequence of positive integers satisfying \(n_{k+1}- n_k \in \{ 1,2\}\) and let \(f\) be a one-periodic function of bounded variation with \( \int_0^1 f(x) dx = 0 \). For any given real number \(\Lambda \geq 0\) the authors show in Theorem 1.1 that there exists a sequence \((n_k)_{k \geq 1}\) such that \[ \limsup_{N\rightarrow \infty} \frac{\left | \sum_{k=1}^N f(n_k x) \right |}{\sqrt{N \log \log N} } = \Lambda \| f\| \;\;\text{for almost all \(x\)}, \] where \(\| f \|\) denotes the \(L^2(0,1)\) norm of \(f\). In Theorem 1.2, the function \(f\) is replaced by the discrepancy of \(( \langle n_k x \rangle )_{k \geq 1}\), where \(\langle \cdot \rangle\) denotes the fractional part of a real number, and a similar result is proved in this setting. These results complement an earlier result of the authors [Probab. Theory Relat. Fields 154, 607--620 (2012, Zbl 1260.60050)] in which it was shown that there exists a sequence \((n_k)_{k \geq 1}\) of positive integers with bounded gaps such that there is a law of the iterated logarithm (LIL) in the form \[ \limsup_{N\rightarrow \infty} \frac{\left | \sum_{k=1}^N \cos(2 \pi n_k x) \right |}{\sqrt{N \log \log N} } = \infty \;\;\text{for almost all } x. \]
