The aim of this paper is to study rates of escape from Julia sets. If f is an analytic endomorphism of the Riemann sphere \({\bar {\mathbb{C}}}={\mathbb{C}}\cup \{\infty \}\) (i.e. f is a rational map), then the Julia set J(f) usually acts as a repelling set. Thus, it is natural to ask questions about escape rates from Julia sets. The author's main theorem is the following: If f: \({\bar {\mathbb{C}}}\to {\bar {\mathbb{C}}}\) is a rational map such that the positive orbit of c(f)\(\cap J(f)\) is finite, then for any open set U with \(\cap_{n\geq 0}f^ n(cl(U))\subset int(U)\), the following limit exists, and the formula holds: \(R(U)=R(cl(U))=\lim_{n\to \infty}(1/n)\log vol(\cap^{n- 1}_{k=0}f^{-k}(U))\) \(=\min \{0,\sup \{h_{\nu}(f)-2\int \log | f'| d\nu\) with \(\nu\in {\mathcal M}(f)\), Supp(\(\nu\))\(\subset U\}\}\) where int(U) and cl(U) are the interior and closure of U, respectively, \({\mathcal M}(f)\) is the space of f-invariant Borel probabilities, Supp(\(\nu\)) is the support of the measure \(\nu\), \(h_{\nu}(f)\) is the entropy of the measure \(\nu\) with respect to f, and c(f) is the set of critical points of f. R(U) is called the rate of escape of U (by f).
