Notebooks left by Ramanujan contain the suggestion that if real \( a(i) \) tends to \( A > 1/4 \), the continued fraction \( a(1) / [ 1 - a(2) / [ 1 - a(3) / [ 1 - \ldots ]]] \) diverges. Making use of the general theory of fractional linear transformations it is shown that there is such a sequence \( a(i) \) for which the continued fraction converges. The matter might be clinched by producing a suitable sequence \( a(i) \) whose members can be exhibited in simple closed form and lead to a continued fraction whose convergents may also be exhibited in such form.
