The author considers the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional Prandtl-Reiss system \(\rho(u_t + u u_x)+(p-s)_x=0\), \(\rho_t + (\rho u)_x=0\), \(s_t+u s_x -\frac{4}{3}\mu u_x =0\) \((t\geq 0\), \(x\in \mathbb{R})\). Here the functions \(\rho\) and \(u\) stand for the density and velocity of a medium, \(s\) is the tension, \(p=p(\rho)\) is the pressure, and \(\mu=\text{const}>0\). The Cauchy problem for this system is reduced to a free boundary problem which, after linearization of the initial data, looks as follows: \(u_t-av_x=f(x)\), \(v_t-u_x=0\), \(t>0\), \(x\in \mathbb{R}\), \(v(\varphi_{\pm}(t),t)= \exp( -s_0(\varphi_{\pm}(t)))\), \((u,v)(x,0)=(u_0,1)(x)\), \(x\in \mathbb{R}\), \(t>0\), where \(u_0\) and \(s_0\) are the initial data for the functions \(u\) and \(s\), \(f(x)=s_0'(x)\) and \(a=c^2=-(p'(1)-1)\) for \(t<\psi(x)\), \(f(x)=0\) and \(a=c_1^2=-p'(1)\) for \(t>\psi(x)\); \(\psi^{-1}(x)=\varphi_+(t)\) for \(x>0\) and \(\psi^{-1}(x)=\varphi_-(t)\) for \(x<0\). Under determination are the functions \(u,v\in C(t\geq 0)\cap C^1(t> 0\), \(x\neq \varphi_{\pm}(t))\), and the functions \(\varphi_{\pm}(t)\in C(t\geq 0)\cap C^1(t>0)\). Existence and uniqueness of solutions to this problem are established locally in time.
