The 2D model=following servo problem is considered for the case where one of the independent variables of the system is unbounded and the other one is finitely bounded. It is shown that the problem under a specified quadratic performance index can be transformed to an equivalent 1D LQR problem and solved using the well-known 1D methods. Relations between the solvability conditions obtained from the equivalent 1D LQR problem and the practical stabilizability and detectability of the original 2D plant are established. A numerical example for a metal rolling process is presented.
