The aim of this paper is to study the stochastic behaviour of ergodic sums for non-hyperbolic ergodic automorphisms of the torus. In the hyperbolic case strong limit theorems can be deduced from the existence of Markov partitions [see, e.g., \textit{Y. Guivarc'h} and \textit{J. Hardy}, Ann. Inst. Henri Poincaré, Probab. Stat. 24, 73-98 (1988; Zbl 0649.60041)]. In the non-hyperbolic case a new approach has to be developed. The author of the present paper uses the method of ``martingale differences'' to obtain refinements of the central limit theorem for regular functions for ergodic non-hyperbolic automorphisms of the torus. The key point of the proof is the good distribution of the contracting leaves in the torus, which leads, thanks to Gordin's method [\textit{M. I. Gordin}, Sov. Math. Dokl. 10, 1174-1176 (1969); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 188, 739-741 (1969; Zbl 0212.50005)], to the central limit theorem for subsequences and to the Donsker and Strassen invariance principles.
