Consider a real flag manifold \(M^n\) as a submanifold of Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^{n+q+1}\) via its realization as an orbit of the isotropy representation of some semisimple symmetric space. Then \(M\) can be viewed as a submanifold in some sphere \(S^{n+q}\subset\mathbb{R}^{n+q+1}\). By projecting it to the real projective space \(\mathbb{R} P^{n+q}\) and embedding \(\mathbb{R} P^{n+q}\) as a totally real totally geodesic submanifold in \(\mathbb{C} P^{n+q}\) we get an isometric totally real immersion \(f:M^n\to\mathbb{C} P^{n+q}\). The authors prove the following results. The second fundamental form \(\alpha\) of this immersion is parallel with respect to any canonical connection \(\nabla^c\) on \(M^n\) (that is, a metric connection \(\nabla^c\) for which \(\nabla^c(\nabla-\nabla^c)=0\), where \(\nabla\) is the Levi Civita connection). Moreover, if \(g\) and \(J\) denote the Riemannian metric and complex structure on \(\mathbb{C} P^{n+q}\), respectively, then \(g(\alpha (X,X),JX)=0\) holds for all \(X\in TM^n\). Conversely, if \(M^n\) is a compact simply connected Riemannian manifold equipped with some canonical connection \(\nabla^c\) and if \(f:M^n\to\mathbb{C} P^{n+q}\) is a totally real isometric immersion for which \(\nabla^c\alpha=0\) and \(g(\alpha(X,X),JX)=0\) holds for all \(X\in TM^n\), then \(M^n\) is a real flag manifold and \(f\) is as described above.
