The author considers a tenth-order locally accurate finite difference formula, utilizing off-step points, to approximate the Schrödinger operator on a finite interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions at both ends. The case of semi-infinite interval is approached in the same way but the length of the approximate interval for that case is determined numerically. Extensive computational experiments illustrate the advantages of the method over comparable numerical methods characterized by the fact that they allow for the simultaneous calculation of an approximation of a finite subset of the spectrum of the original problem. The study of the global truncation error and the round-off error would have enhanced the analysis.
