The main aim of the present paper is to prove an asymptotic formula with remainder term for the spectral mean value of the squares of the Fourier coefficients of vector valued Maass wave forms of weight 1/2 for the three-dimensional unitary multiplier system \({\mathcal V}\) on \(SL(2,\mathbb{Z})\), which is induced by the one-dimensional multiplier system \(v_ 3\) belonging to the classical theta series \(\vartheta_ 3\) on the theta group. The proof essentially follows the lines of Kuznetsov's original proof of his celebrated sum formula, where an analogous formula is derived for Maass wave forms of weight zero and constant multiplier system. An additional ingredient in this paper is the use of a mean square estimate for Dirichlet \(L\)-series which occur in the Fourier expansion of the relevant Eisenstein series.
