In the author's study about the problem of simplicial normalization in the entire cyclic cohomology of Banach algebras, it was necessary to estimate the norms of the two elements \(L\) and \(g\) which generate the group algebra of the infinite dihedral group with which the Cuntz algebras of the free product of the augmentation of the algebra of complex numbers \(\widetilde C\) by itself is closely related. So, it was natural to try and find explicite formulae for these norms. This lead the author to discover the following interesting binomial identities involving combinations of the binomial coefficients: \[ \sum^{[(n- 2j)/2]}_{i= 0} \Biggl({n\atop 2(i+ j)}\Biggr)\Biggl({i+ j\atop i}\Biggr)= {n\over n- j} \Biggl({n- j\atop j}\Biggr) 2^{n- (2j+ 1)} \] \[ \sum^{[(n- 2j)/2]}_{i= 0} \Biggl({n\atop (i+ j)+ 1}\Biggr) \Biggl({i+ j\atop i}\Biggr)= \Biggl({n- (j+ 1)\atop j}\Biggr) 2^{n- (2j+ 1)}, \] where \([x]\) denotes the integer part of the number \(x\) and \(n\), \(j\) are non-negative integers. Related to these formulas the author says: ``I do not know if these formulae are known, as I have not been able to trace them in the literature. I feel, however, that even if they were derived before, the present approach gives an interesting new habitat for them, in relation to the Pascal's triangle in the Cuntz algebra''.
