It is established the existence of at least one solution for the semilinear elliptic problem \[ -\triangle u + u = \lambda|u|^{q-2}u-h(x)|u|^{p-2}u, \qquad u > 0 \quad \text{in }\mathbb{R}^N, \] where \(h > 0\) is a continuous function on \(\mathbb{R}^N\) satisfying \(\int_{\mathbb{R}^N} h^{q/(q-p)} dx < \infty\), \(2 < q < p < 2^* = 2N/(N-2),\) \(N \geq 3\) and \(\lambda\) is greater than or equal to a certain \(\lambda_0 > 0.\) If \(0 < \lambda < \lambda_0,\) then a solution does not exist. Moreover, it is proved that there exist infinitely many solutions in \(H^1(\mathbb{R}^N)\) when the nonlinearity is replaced by \(k(x)|u|^{q-2}u - \mu| u| ^{p-2}u,\) with \(1 < q < 2 < p < 2^*,\) where \(k \in L^s(\mathbb{R}^N)\) is a positive continuous function, \(s = 2N/(2N-qN+2q)\) and \(\mu > 0\) is a parameter.
