    Let \(\Omega\subset \mathbb{R}^n, n \geq 2,\) be a domain and \(F: \Omega \to \mathbb{R}^n\) a mapping in the Sobolev space \(W^{1,1}(\Omega,\mathbb{R}^n)\). The mapping \(F\) is a mapping with finite dilatation if there exists a function \(K\) such that for almost all \(x \in \Omega, 1 \leq K(x) < \infty \) \[ | DF(x)| ^n \leq K(x)J_F(x), \] where \(| DF(x)| \) is the operator norm of the differential \(DF(x)\) of \(F\) at \(x\) and \(J_F(x) = \det DF(x).\) It has been conjectured by \textit{T. Iwaniec} and \textit{V. Šverák} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 118, No. 1, 181--188 (1993; Zbl 0784.30015)] that whenever a nonconstant \(F \in W^{1,n}_{\text{loc}}(\Omega, R^n)\), and \(K \in L_{\text{loc}}^{n-1}(\Omega)\) then \(F\) is continuous, open and discrete. The aim of this paper is to prove this conjecture for a special class of mappings.
