A weight function on \([-1,1]\) with a finite number of algebraic singularities is known as the generalized Jacobi weight function. The author studies the asymptotics of the three-term recurrence coefficients for the orthonormal polynomials with respect to such weights. The main tool is the steepest descend method of Deift and Zhou which can be implemented thanks to the fact that the recurrence coefficients are written in terms of the solution of the corresponding Riemann-Hilbert problem. The author obtains a complete asymptotic expansion for the recurrence coefficients in powers of \(1/n\). In addition, the Riemann-Hilbert approach produces also a strong asymptotics for the orthogonal polynomials themselves near the algebraic singularities in terms of the Bessel functions.
