Discretizing a two-dimensional convection-diffusion partial differential equation, in a convex domain consisting of a union of rectangles, by a difference scheme, a large sparse linear system having a non-symmetric \(M\)-matrix is obtained. The authors develop a multilevel block incomplete LU (ILU) preconditioner for solving this system. Some theoretical results for M-matrices and for splitting a matrix into a difference are presented. Two problems with Dirichlet boundary conditions are considered and the number of iterations for two type of preconditioner discussed.
