Sign central matrices and nearly sign central matrices (NSCM) were fully characterized by \textit{T. Ando} and \textit{R. A. Brualdi} [Linear Algebra Appl. 208--209, 283--295 (1994; Zbl 0818.15017)] resp. \textit{G.-Y. Lee} and \textit{G.-S. Cheon} [Bull. Korean Math. Soc. 37, 771--778 (2000; Zbl 0978.15015)]. In this paper, the authors give a different characterization of NSCM, introduce the notion of nearly minimal sign central matrices, and establish a number of their properties.
