    Let \(G\) be a locally compact Vilenkin group, that is, \(G\) is an infinite compact metrizable zero-dimensional abelian group and let \(\Gamma=(\chi_ n)_ 0^ \infty\) denote the character group of \(G\). Let \((m_ n)_ 0^ \infty\) be the usual sequence of integers determined by the structure of \(G\) and let \(p_ n=m_{m+1}/m_ n\). \(G\) is called bounded if \(\sup\{p_ n: n\geq 0\}<\infty\), otherwise \(G\) is said to be unbounded. For bounded Vilenkin groups \textit{J. J. F. Fournier} and \textit{W. M. Self} [J. Math. Anal. Appl. 126, 355-374 (1987; Zbl 0639.42002)] proved the following analogue of a theorem of Fomin for cosine series: if \((c_ n)\) is a sequence such that (i) \(c_ n\to 0\) and (ii) \(\sum_{j=0}^ \infty (m_{j+1})^{1/p'} (\sum_{n=m_ j}^{m_{j+1}-1} |\Delta c_ n|^ p)^{1/p}<\infty\) for some \(1<p<\infty\), then the series \(\sum a_ n\chi_ n\in L^ 1(G)\). The present authors prove a comparable result for unbounded Vilenkin groups. Let \((c_ n)\) satisfy (i), (ii)\(^*\) \(\sum_{j=0}^ \infty (\sum_{i=0}^ j p_ i(m_ i)^{1/p'}) (\sum_{n=m_ j}^{m_{j+1}-1} |\Delta c_ n|^ p)^{1/p}<\infty\) for some \(1<p\leq 2\) and (iii) \(\sum_{j=0}^ \infty (\log p_{j+1}) \sum_{n=m_ j}^{m_{j+1}-1} |\Delta c_ n|<\infty\). Then \(\sum a_ n\chi_ n\in L^ 1(G)\). As the authors mention, for bounded Vilenkin groups conditions (ii) and (ii)\(^*\) are equivalent.
