Maxwell behandelt die Verteilung der Elektricität auf zwei leitenden Kugeln und erhält als Wert für die Ladung \(Q_a\) der einen, vom Radius \(a\) und dem Potential \(V\), wo \(b\) der Radius der andern ist: \[ \frac{Q_a}V = \sum_{s=1}^{s=\infty}\frac{a^2b}{s(a+b)\{s(a+b)-a\}}. \] Setzt man \(n=\frac b{a+b}\), wo \(n\) nicht negativ sein darf, und ferner \[ \begin{multlined} \frac{d\log\Gamma(n)}{dn} - \left[\frac{d\log\Gamma(n)}{dn}\right]_{n=1} = -H(n)\\ = \left(1-\frac1n\right) + \left(\frac12-\frac1{n+1}\right) + \left(\frac13-\frac1{n+2}\right) + \cdots\text{ad inf.},\end{multlined} \] so ist \[ \frac{Q_a}V = \frac{ab}{a+b}H\left(\frac b{a+b}\right),\quad\frac{Q_b}V = \frac{ab}{a+b}H\left(\frac a{a+b}\right). \] Diese Resultate werden zum Teil weiter verfolgt, zum Teil specialisirt.
