Let \(p\) denote an odd prime, and let \(h^-(p)\) denote the minus class number of the field of \(p\)-th roots of unity. It is known that \[ \log h^-(p) = \frac{p-3}4 \log p - \frac{p}2 \log 2\pi + \log(1-\beta) + f(1), \] where \(\beta\) denotes a Siegel zero if it exists and if \(p \equiv 3 \bmod 4\) (and the term involving \(\beta\) does not appear otherwise), and where \(f\) is the function \(f(s) = \sum \log L(s,\chi) - \log(s-\beta)\), the sum being over all odd Dirichlet characters defined modulo \(p\). In this paper, the author improves known bounds on \(f(1)\) by showing that \(f(1) = O((\log \log p)^2)\).
