    The system for the state \(y \in H^2(\Omega) \cap H_0^1(\Omega)\) is \[ \varphi \leq y \leq \psi , \quad (Ay - f(x, y, u))(y - \varphi) \leq 0 , \quad (Ay - f(x, y, u))(y - \psi) \leq 0 \tag{1} \] in an \(n\)-dimensional domain \(\Omega\) with a cost functional \[ J(y, u) = \int_\Omega L(x, y(x), u(x)) dx ; \] the controls \(u(x)\) take values in a separable complete metric space, and \(A\) is a second order elliptic operator. The optimal control problem is that of minimizing \(J(y, u)\) under (1), a problem related to, but not exactly the same as the problem with state constraints \[ \varphi \leq y \leq \psi , \quad Ay = f(x, y, u) . \] The author shows existence of a minimum and a necessary condition of the type of Pontryagin's maximum principle.
