This book contains a comprehensive description of what already can be found in the well-reputated S library survival 5, which can be found in the commercial statistical software Splus, as well as in the GPL-licensed statistical programming environment R. It gives an introduction to survival analysis, with emphasis on the Cox model, and with several illustrations from the authors' practice as biostatisticians. After the introductory chapters, more advanced topics are treated; various forms of residual analysis, tests of functional form and proportional hazards, influence, and multiple events per subject. An important chapter treats the today so popular topic of frailty models, before the book ends with a chapter on expected survival, and several appendices containing SAS macros, S functions and data sets. The book is a very useful companion for the practitioner of survival analysis, and particularly for one who uses the Cox model and survival 5.
