Symbolic representations of dynamical systems are discussed. Note that here a finite or countable alphabet is allowed. If one has more than one representation, then these representations are different in how good the dynamics of the symbolic representation corresponds to the dynamics of the original map. In order to describe this different definitions for such representations are given. The authors give also a description of a representation of certain discontinuous maps. In the one-dimensional case one has the best correspondence between the representation and the map.
