The effective string action of string cosmology is considered at low energy, with the purpose of expanding the solutions of the corresponding Hamilton-Jacobi equations with respect to the order of spatial gradients involved in each term. At zero order (in the long-wavelength approximation) for instance the equations \(\phi^{(0)}(t)=-2/(\sqrt{3}-1)\ln (t_0-t)\) and \(\gamma_{ij}^{(0)}(t, x^l)=(t_0-t)^{-2/\sqrt{3}}k_{ij}(x^l)\) are found as first terms for the dilation \(\phi\) and for the metric \(\gamma_{ij}\) on a spacelike hypersurface, respectively. Here \(t<t_0\) corresponds to a phase of `superinflation' of the model. The second order contributions are also derived explicitly, and the influence of initial inhomogeneities on these expansions is studied.
