This paper considers the existence of periodic solution for a class of damped vibration problems \[ \begin{aligned} & \ddot{u}(t) + q(t) \dot{u} + \Delta F(t, u(t)) = 0 \text{ for a.e. } t\in [0, T],\\ &u(0) - u(T) = \dot{u}(0) - \dot{u}(T) = 0.\end{aligned} \] This paper establishes some sufficient conditions on the existence of periodic solutions, which extend and improve some recent results in the literature listed in the paper. In the proof of the main results, the authors introduce a kind of superquadratic and asymptotically quadratic conditions, and make use of the generalized mountain pass theorem in the critical point theory. They propose a unified approach when the potential function \(F(t, u)\) exhibits either an asymptotically quadratic or a superquadratic behavior at infinity.
