The authors comment on six woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer (1471--1528) representing six knots (more precisely, links), which are extremely interesting, because of their intricate history (it is conceivable that they were originally drawn by Leonardo da Vinci, and that Dürer copied them), because of their beauty, and because of their mathematical aspect, including symmetry properties, are a variety of knot-theoretic questions that one may address when looking at these pictures. As the authors suggest, the large number of crossings in these drawings also make relations with the theory of infinite link diagrams and periodic tilings. The paper is beautifully illustrated.
