A method to construct a densely distributionally chaotic direct sum operator such that none of its factor operators exhibits Li-Yorke chaos is presented. This shows that the Li-Yorke chaos and the distributional chaos of linear operators behaves differently from hypercyclicity, topological ergodicity and Devaney chaos, since the dynamics of the countable direct sum of operators can be easily inherited from that of the finite direct sum of operators. Moreover, it is shown that for any \(b>a>0\), there exists an invertible operator \(T\) acting on a Hilbert space such that for \([a,b]=\) \(\{\lambda>0:\lambda T\) is distributionally chaotic\(\}\) and for any distinct \(\lambda_{1} ,\lambda_{2}\in[ a,b]\), the operators \(\lambda_{1}T\) and \(\lambda_{2}T\) have no common irregular vectors. Recall that a vector \(x\) is called irregular for \(T\) if \(\lim\inf_{n\rightarrow\infty}\left\| T^{n}x\right\| =0\) and \(\lim\sup_{n\rightarrow\infty}\left\| T^{n}x\right\| =\infty.\) The existence of an irregular vector is equivalent to the fact that \(T\) is Li-Yorke chaotic [\textit{T. Bermúdez} et al., J. Math. Anal. Appl. 373, No. 1, 83--93 (2011; Zbl 1214.47012)].
