    Let \(K\) be a number field with ring of integers, \({\mathcal O}_K\). Hence, if \({\mathfrak P}\triangleleft{\mathcal O}_K\) is a prime, there is a canonical homormorphism \[ \phi:K_{2i-1}({\mathcal O}_K)\otimes \mathbb{Z}_{(\ell)}\to K_{2i-1}({\mathcal O}_K/{\mathfrak P})\otimes\mathbb{Z}_{(\ell)} \] for each \(i\geq 1\) and each prime, \(\ell\). In [\textit{B. Harris} and \textit{G. Segal}, Ann. Math., II. Ser. 101, 20-33 (1975; Zbl 0331.18015)] it is shown that \(\phi\) is split surjective for suitably chosen \({\mathfrak P}\) (and most \(K\)). This gives rises to a summand of \(K_{2i-1}({\mathcal O}_K)\) isomorphic to \(H^0(K;(\mathbb{Q}_\ell/\mathbb{Z}_\ell)(i))\). In [\textit{W. G. Dwyer}, \textit{E. M. Friedlander} and \textit{S. A. Mitchell}, \(K\)-Theory 6, No. 4, 285-300 (1992; Zbl 0780.19001)] it is shown that all summands obtained by this method coincide. The author pushes this further to produce a map to get canonical, homotopy-theoretic splittings. More precisely, to any \(\mathbb{Z}[1/\ell]\)-scheme, \(X\), the author constructs a ring spectrum, \(j_\ell(X)\), such that \[ \pi_n(j_\ell(X))\cong\begin{cases} H^0_{\text{ét}}(X;(\mathbb{Q}_\ell/\mathbb{Z}_\ell)(i)) &\text{if }n=2i-1>0,\\ \mathbb{Z}^{\pi_0(X)}_\ell &\text{if }n=0,\\ 0 &\text{otherwise}.\end{cases} \] This spectrum comes with a canonical map to the ``Bott periodic'' \(K\)-theory spectrum of \textit{V. Snaith} [``Algebraic \(K\)-theory and localised stable homotopy theory'', Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 280 (1983; Zbl 0529.55015)]. This map can be used to deduce the Harris-Segal-like splittings and is crucial in the construction of the ``anti-Chern classes'' of \textit{B. Kahn} [NATO ASI Ser., Ser. C 279, 117-176 (1989; Zbl 0698.14011) and ibid. 407, 147-166 (1993)].
