The authors consider minimizers \(u :\mathbb{R}^n\supset\mathbb{R}^N\) of class \(W^1_2\) of functionals of the type \[ F(u)=\int_{\Omega}A^{ij}_{\alpha\beta}(x,u(x)) D_\alpha u^i(x)D_\beta u^j(x)\,dx \] with elliptic coefficients \(A^{ij}_{\alpha\beta}\). Assuming that the coefficients are of vanishing mean oscillation w.r.t. the variable \(x\) and being continuous functions of the second argument, they show that in the scalar case the gradient of \(u\) is in the Morrey space \(L^{2,\lambda}_{\text{loc}} (\Omega)\) for any \(\lambda < n\). If \(N > 1\), then there is an open subset \(\Omega_0\) of \(\Omega\) whose complement has Hausdorff dimension less than \(n - 2\), such that now \(\nabla u\in L^{2,\lambda}(\Omega)\) for all \(\lambda < n\). The proof is obtained via Campanato's freezing technique.
