A Banach space \(X\) is is said to have the fixed point property, FPP, if for each nonempty, closed, bounded, convex subset \(c\) of \(X\), every nonexpansive mapping of \(C\) into itself has a fixed point. A Banach space is said to have the weak fixed point property, WFPP, if the class of sets \(C\) in the previous definition is restricted to the set of weakly compact convex sets. The most important open problem in metric fixed point theory is whether every reflexive spaces has the FPP. The authors give some partial answers to this problem. Theorem 6 asserts that \(E\)-convex spaces have the fixed point property. Bearing in mind that the class of \(E\)-convex spaces strictly contains the class of the uniformly nonsquare Banach spaces, this result extends the result proved by \textit{J.\,García--Falset, E. Llorens--Fuster} and \textit{E.\,M.\thinspace Mazcunan--Navarro} [J.~Funct.\ Anal.\ 233, No.\,2, 494--514 (2006; Zbl 1120.46006)]. In Theorem~3, the authors prove that if \(X\) is a Banach space such that is its dual ball weak* sequentially compact and its dual has the weak* uniform Kadec--Klee property, then \(X\) has the WFPP; as is pointed by the authors, this result is a special case of a previous result proved by \textit{J.\,García Falset} [J.~Math.\ Anal.\ Appl.\ 215, No.\,2, 532--542 (1997; Zbl 0902.47048)].
