Semilinear parabolic type equations with point and distributed delays in the state are considered. Under suitable assumptions imposed on the nonlinear term, the wellposedness and regularity of the solutions in an appropriately defined Hilbert space are discussed. Next, using the theory of linear semigroups, the retarded equation is transformed into an abstract semilinear differential equation without delays, but defined in a suitable Hilbert space. Moreover, the concept of reachable set is introduced and approximate controllability in a given time interval is examined. A sufficient condition for approximate controllability is formulated and proved. Relationships to results known in the literature are also presented. Similar approximate controllability problems for abstract semilinear retarded control systems have been considered in the paper [\textit{J. Y. Park}, \textit{D. G. Park}, \textit{Y. C. Kwun} and \textit{W. K. Kang}, ``Controllability for nonlinear integro-differential equations with delay'', Far East J. Math. Sci. 4, No. 3, 371-394 (1996)].
