The author presents the notion of vertex operator coalgebra, which is dual to the notion of vertex operator algebra. Moreover the author constructs a large family of vertex operator coalgebras based on certain vertex operator algebras. The notion of vertex operator coalgebra is motivated by the geometric meanings of vertex operator algebra due to \textit{Y.-Z. Huang} [``Two-dimensional conformal geometry and vertex operator algebras Progress in Math. Vol. 148 Boston, MA: Birkhäuser. Boston, MA (1997; Zbl 0884.17021)] and the operadic formulation of vertex operator algebra by \textit{Y.-Z. Huang} and \textit{J. Lepowsky} [Contemp. Math. 175, 131--148 (1994; Zbl 0848.17030)]. A vertex operator algebra is a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-graded vector space \(V\) with a linear map \(Y(\cdot,x)\): \(V\to(\text{End}\,V)x,x^{-1}\) which satisfies a set of axioms, while a vertex operator coalgebra is a \(\mathbb{Z}\)-graded vector space \(V\) with linear maps \(Y^\vee(x):V\to(V\otimes V)x,x^{-1}\) which satisfies a set of axioms adjoint to that of vertex operator algebra. Let \((V,Y)\) be a vertex operator algebra which possesses a nondegenerate, Virasoro preserving bilinear form \((\cdot,\cdot)\). It is shown that the vector space \(V\) with the linear maps \(Y^\vee(x):V\to(V \otimes V)x,x^{-1}\) defined by \((Y^\vee(x)u,v\otimes w)=(u,Y(v,x) w)\) is a vertex operator coalgebra, where \((u_1\otimes u_2,v_1\otimes v_2)=(u_1,v_1)(u_2,v_2)\) for \(u_1,u_2,v_1,v_2\in V\). As an example, the case for the vertex operator algebra associated to a Heisenberg algebra is discussed in detail.
