Starting from the stationarity principle for potential energy, a higher order plate theory (called \(p\)-model) is established using Legendre polynomials in the plate thickness. The \(p\)-model contains the Reissner-Mindlin theory as a special case. The authors consider five technical boundary conditions. By adopting singular perturbation method, they obtain asymptotic expansions of the solution to arbitrary high order, and give rigorous bounds for the errors. In part II the boundary layer behavior is studied for different boundary conditions, and approximate strengths are obtained, whose convergence as \(p\to\infty\) is investigated. Additionally, a numerical verification of the theoretical results is given. As for the Reissner-Mindlin model, it is shown that it can yield good or bad results, depending on the boundary conditions.
