    The authors prove the following Lieb-Thirring type inequality \[ \text{Trace} [F(-\Delta+V)] \leq \int_{{\mathbb R}^d} G(V(x)) \,dx, \] for the Schrödinger operator \(-\Delta+V\) with a potential \(V\) in \(L^1_{\text{loc}}({\mathbb R}^d),\) bounded from below and such that \(G(V)\in L^1({\mathbb R} ^d).\) The functions \(F\) and \(G\) are defined by \[ F(s)=\int_0^\infty e^{-ts} f(t) \frac{dt}{t},\quad G(s)=\int_0^\infty e^{-ts} (4\pi t)^{-d/2} f(t) \frac{dt}{t}, \] where \(f\) is nonnegative and \(\int_0^\infty f(t) (1+t^{-d/2})\frac{dt}{t}<\infty.\) For example, if \(F(s)=e^{-s}\) then \(G(s)=(4\pi)^{-d/2} e^{-s}.\) In the case \(F(s)=s^{-\gamma}, \) \(\gamma>d/2,\) the above result becomes \[ \sum [\lambda_i(V)]^{-\gamma} \leq C(\gamma) \int_{{\mathbb R}^d} V^{d/2-\gamma} (x) \,dx, \] where the eigenvalues \(\lambda_i(V)\) form a positive unbounded nondecreasing sequence. The value of the sharp constant \(C(\gamma)\) is given explicitly. The authors also discuss the relations to some stability problems and to the best constants in Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities.
