Actually there is an improvement of an earlier technique developed by \textit{A. N. Krylov} [On some differential equations of mathematical physics having applications in engineering (Russian). Moskva-Leningrad: Gostekhteorixdat (1950)] and \textit{V. A. Chernyatin} [Justification of the Fourier method in the mixed boundary value problem for partial differential equations (Russian). Moskva: Izdatel'stvo Moskovskogo Gosudarstvennogo Universiteta (1991; Zbl 0743.35002)]. The idea behind is to apply contour integration to the resolvent of the operator generated by the spectral problem of the Fourier method. This resolvent approach is applied to an initial boundary value problem with fixed ends of the wave equation and to an initial boundary value problem with periodic boundary conditions of the wave equation. In both cases one proves that the formal solution to the problem generates a classical solution under minimal requirements on the initial data.
